Projected Elias Rankings

The good news is that I have finally, with reasonable certainty, figured out the disabled list adjustment in the Elias Rankings. The bad news is that it requires going through every player's transactions data and does not lend itself to quick updating.

This post will have my projected Elias Sports Bureau Rankings. I will post a different positional group every few days.

Players in Bold will be free agents after the year. Players in bold and italicized have options on their contracts.

For more information on where these numbers are coming from, check the following posts:
http://tigers-thoughts.blogspot.com/2008/07/almost-how-elias-sports-bureau-rankings.html

If you have any questions, please leave them in the comments section or email me, and I should be able to answer them.

Great work. What do you think Pudge needs to do the rest of the season to bump up Type A? I guess i really want to know what combination of him improving/Ramon Hernandez doing badly needs to happen? Thanks

Eddie Bajek said...

Pudge is 12th in home runs, but is only two behind Kelly Shoppach, who is 9th.
He's only 4 RBI's behind AJ Pierzynski and 7 behind Jason Varitek.
Another area he could quickly gain ground is batting average, where he is within percentage points of Salty and Jamie Burke. Don't rule out making up ground in OBP, where he is just one point behind Jeff Clement.

In other words, things are tight, and a lot can happen.

Eddie: this is fantastic work, and while I know it's time-consuming, it's certainly a worthwhile endeavor. Congrats and keep up the good work.

Anonymous said...

Great work man...Absolutly great

Anonymous said...

FYI - you mislabelled the National League First Basem...as American League.

Otherwise, great stuff!

The Professor said...

Crawford's '09 option has already been picked up. the Rays had to decide in April. Rocco's option was bought out.

Telemachus said...

Will you be able to do the pitchers as well?

Eddie Bajek said...

Pitchers are next. AL Starters will be next: not sure when.

Ale84 said...

Fantastic work. Thanks!

Anonymous said...

Great stuff! On the rankings, where would you put Joba, starter or reliever?

Eddie Bajek said...

Joba is a reliever, because he has been a reliever in more games in the past two seasons than he has a starter

Alex said...

Shaun Marcum missing from the AL starters list.. (he was in AAA for a week or so, maybe he wasn't on your list?)

Eddie Bajek said...

Marcum isn't on the list because he wasn't on the Major League roster or DL on August 31.

Telemachus said...

wow...Red Sox are going to get a sandwich pick for sending cash to the Indians for Byrd! What a great deal.

The type B guys are almost more valuable then the type A because teams don't have to worry about losing draft picks for signing them, making it more likely that they will sign before the arbitration deadline...

Epstein strikes gold again...

Anonymous said...

What happens if a team offers arbitration to a type A free agent and they decline and retire?

Telemachus said...

nothing...that is what happened with Piazza and the A's.

Sam Ritter said...

Can you give a brief explanation of how the system works? How, for example, can Matt Holliday have a higher rating than Albert Pujols?

It would seem simpler to rate free agents according to the salary the new club is paying. So, if a player gets more than X million, he is type A. If he gets X million but more than Y million, he is type B. If he gets less than Y million he is neither. That way the market determines the rating and it is not necessary to use some arbitrary rating system.

Eddie Bajek said...

I gave the explanation in some earlier posts. I've now linked to those in this post. Sorry for the confusion.

Unknown said...

Ryan Dempster? I'm positive he'd be a Type A guy, but he isnt on the list?

Eddie Bajek said...

Position is based on most games played in the past two years. Dempster will be with the relievers.

Unknown said...

How can take these rankings serious when you have Bronson Arroyo ahead of Edinson Volquez. I mean seriously which of the two would rather have. Elias do better!

Anonymous said...

Don't tell anybody but Elias considers the last two years, not just this one.

Anonymous said...

Interesting, but I don't see how the numbers add up and like the poster before me says Elias uses 2 seasons to calculate the rankings.

Take Milton Bradley for example. You have him as a Type B. Bradley was a Type A last year which was calculated on the 2006 and 2007 seasons. Next year his Elias ranking would be based on his 2007 and 2008 seasons. 2006 is switched out and 2008 switched in.

Bradley will clearly be a Type A, his 2008 season far outperformed his 2006 season.

Eddie Bajek said...

Bradley was competing against OF last year and DH this year. There are a ton of bench players who help put him in the top 20 percent of outfielders. This year, he is compared to just 9 other designated hitters, all of which have been able to rack up the counting stats to bump him down.

Bradley leads all DH's in BA and OBP, but is really lacking in the counting stats. He is getting a boost for missing time due to injury last year, but he spent a lot of time on the bench. That time is not accounted for, and he is killed by that.

Anonymous said...

I don't think that is how it works, didn't you say that all category 2 players are grouped together (1B, OF, DH)? If it is taken the way that you say then it is a terribly flawed system.

I still don't think the totals have as equal weight as the other statistics.

Bradley's 52 RBIs and 14 HRs doesn't seem too high even as an OF to earn him a Type A free-agent last year.

Eddie Bajek said...

Anon, check the original link above entitled (Almost) how the rankings work.

Basically, the players obtain their scores against the other players at their own position and then they are grouped with players of another position.

A few more points: Bradley is likely to move up because some of the other DH's had maxed out their DL time as of the last update. When Bradley moves up, he will move up a long ways because of the small amount of players in his group. As soon as he moves up one spot in one category, he gains two points. If he passes 6 guys in homeruns, that's 12 points.

Bradley is also hurt by being in the American League, where his competition is a lot better, except at shortstop.

In short, you are oversimplifying the rankings system. I have linked my explanation for how it works above. Please if you have any specific questions or clarification, please let me know.

Anonymous said...

Eddie,

I appreciate your hard work, but I hope you are wrong with respect to Bradley's classification. I hope there is some proration of Bradley's 2007 OF ranking into his overall ranking this offseason. That is I hope he is not solely evaluated as a DH.

I looked at your link and you state that players used mainly as PH/PR are put into the DH category. Do you have an estimation to how many there are that fit this description?

Eddie Bajek said...

There are none right now.

Bradley will qualify as a DH because he played more games at DH/PH the past two years than at OF. There is no prorating for defensive time and there is no gray area.

As an outfielder, Bradley would qualify as a type A, barely.

Anonymous said...

Eddie,

I did not mean prorating by game by game but per season. But I guess that what you meant. I'm scrtching my head trying to find out how you know this information.

Interesting work. I'd like to see your estimates at the end of the season.

It's excellent work if you are right. Actually it's excellent work if you are not too.

If Tadahito Iguchi is a type "B" do the padres get any compensation next year, since they released him last week?

Eddie Bajek said...

No, I just haven't updated the NL Infielders since the release. They will not get compensation and he will be removed when I update the infielder rankings.

Anonymous said...

Eddie:
how is Carlos Delgado only barely a Type B? I thought the Elias Rankings are based on the last 3 years (2006 to 2008), he had 38, 114 in 2006, 2007 was a down year and the first two months were bad but in total this year his numbers are 35 103.

how is Matt Kemp a type A???...Jeremy Hermida, Ryan Ludwick and Brian Giles as well for OF/1B in NL? isn't Ludwick a one year wonder so far? Giles batting average was 263 in 2006 and has not hit for much power since he has played in Petco Park.

Does the Elias take on potential for a player like Matt Kemp? and if a player makes an All-Star Team like Ryan Ludwick? or past performance beyond the 3 years for Giles?

Eddie Bajek said...

It's the last two years. Delgado's recent hot streak may move him up a bit when I update them. The link in the post will direct you to how the rankings are arrived at. They do not take into consideration anything you mentioned, just the injury-adjusted PA, BA, OBP, HR, and RBI for the players accumulated in the 2007-2008 seasons.

Bear in mind that outfielders get their scores when compared to other outfielders and are only grouped with the firstbasemen once they get their Elias score.

Telemachus said...

Eddie,

Any chance that Gagne will be able to hang on to his "B" status?

That would be a boon for the Brewers, and at least leave the possibility for getting a return on the investment the team made in him.

I think the team will try hard to resign Shouse and will most likely pick up Cameron's option. But it's safe to assume they will lose CC and Sheets. Add Gagne and possibly Shouse and the Brewers are looking at 5 or 6 extra picks!

Eddie Bajek said...

Bear in mind if the Brewers are to get a draft pick for Gagne, they'd have to offer him arbitration and risk being stuck with him for another year.

djw said...

Telemachus, even if Gagne retained type B status, the Brewers would have to risk offering him arbitration. Granted, his agent is Boras and it's unlikely. But what if he DID accept? Imagine the outrage!

Telemachus said...

No outrage, because as you (I believe) pointed out you can cut a vets salary in arbitration as much as you like so the floor wouldn't be locked at 8M.

Also, despite his performance, I think there is a good chance he could get signed before the arbitration deadline because the team signing him wouldn't have to worry about losing any picks...Then the Brewers would get the pick automatically...

Regardless, it seems likely that CC and Sheets will sign with teams in the top half of the standings (Dodgers, Yankees, Mets) with maybe your Tigers jumping in from the bottom...which would leave the team with 5 of the top 40 or so picks...CC will bring back the first pick of the compensation round so 4 of the first 33 (assuming Fields signs)...Any other comp picks would be gravy!

Granted I'd much rather keep one of the two...

Anonymous said...

Ryan Dempster is listed as a reliever even though he's started all season.

why are you guys such idiots...Eddie is so patient in how he explains the system to you...

Position is based on where you have played the most games in the past two season. Ryan Dempster has relieved more than he started in that time frame.

Can you update the Elias rankings after the last game of the year - Sunday???

Eddie-

After his last two wins (and barring a major catastrophe in his last start), any chance Kyle Lohse will sneak into type A classification?

Anonymous said...

Heh - guess that Lohse classification is a moot point now.

Do you have a final update yet? Have you completely succeeded in reverse engineering the rankings? This is freaking awesome, btw.

I'll be posting them in individual posts over the next couple of weeks. I'm double checking everybody's DL status, which takes way too long right now. The Final National League Starting Pitchers are ready, and the relievers should be up sometime tomorrow. I've been pretty busy the past week and haven't had the time to dive through all of the injury transactions of every player.

Jim Thome is not a free agent. 2009 was an option year, but it became guaranteed when he reached a certain amount of ABs during the 2007 and 2008 seasons.
