ESPNews and DRaysBay are reporting Gary Sheffield might be headed to Tampa Bay. Could this mean Tampa Bay claimed him off waivers? If so, would the Tigers let them claim him for nothing? Would the Tigers want a player in return? Would the Rays want the Tigers to pick up some of his salary? Given that, if claimed, the Tigers could dump him off on the Rays and stick them with the salary. The Tigers have some bargaining power here when it comes to players.
This could all be moot if he wasn't claimed though.
Update: Sheffield is in the lineup tonight, so the rumors are still just that: rumors.
